Our Knights of Columbus Council 13517 Family of the Year nomination for 2020 comes as no surprise to those that know them. Congratulations are in order to the family of Adam & Valerie Carr, and their sons Seth & Gavin, for receiving nominations from a few Knights.
Residents of Cuyahoga Falls, Adam operates his own law practice and Valerie is the Service Director in Green, Ohio. Adam is our Council Advocate and Valerie is a member of the IHM Finance Council. The family volunteers much of their time to the parish and community; Adam is involved with RCIA, mentoring an individual through the program. They have also volunteered for the last two Christ on the Corner Parish Day of Service events. Valerie is the VP of the Mother’s Club at Walsh Jesuit High School, was co-coordinator for both Track and Cross Country, and performed other volunteer work at Walsh. Both Adam and Valerie have made significant commitments to the Boy Scouts to head up the Ad Altare Dei program. The purpose of the Ad Altare Dei program is to help Catholic Youth develop a fully Christian way of life in the faith community. This is a 6-8 month commitment which they have done three times so far. Both Seth and Gavin have received this honor. Adam is currently the Advancement coordinator for the Boy Scouts and has been a leader for years.
The Carrs also give of their time to Akron Children’s Hospital in support of a fund honoring their deceased son, Colin, to aid bereavement services at the hospital.
Seth and Gavin attend Walsh Jesuit High School and are very involved. Seth & Gavin are top honors at Walsh Jesuit High School. In fact, Gavin received his first A- this year as a Junior. He had never received anything lower than an A through his entire education! Seth is a Eucharistic Minister and a Kairos student leader at Walsh, both run Cross Country and Track. In addition, both boys enjoy broadcasting for the school’s basketball games. Both Seth and Gavin are Eagle Scouts and have conducted projects to benefit IHM. Seth coordinated the building of the Memorial Gardens at IHM, an area to honor the deceased children of IHM parents. Gavin coordinated the building of the “Gaga Pit” at IHM, something the school children love!
The Carrs exemplify what it means to be a Catholic family and are wonderful role models for other families and individuals in our community. They respect others, yet will speak out against attacks on our Catholic values. They live their faith daily in their work, play, and volunteer activities, which manifests itself in their two children; two young men who also live their faith daily. The list of activities speaks for itself, but ultimately they deserve this award for the people they are and the values they portray as a loving, respectful Catholic family.
